Review: Another Place EP by Winks

Blessed are guitarists in this, the golden age of effect pedals. Not that I have much of a handle on what they do or how, I just see players like Kyle Winkler a.k.a. Winks fiddling with the knobs, and out come these crazy sounds. It sounds mostly like guitar.. but abstracted by one or two degrees. Maybe that doesn't makes any sense, but it does make an EP like Another Place a joy to listen to, especially in headphones. From the submarine 'verb and wigged-out glitch of "Premonition" to the space-age sweeps and bit-crushed echoes of "Eerie Eyrie," this EP is brimmed with sonic details. Circular guitar licks trade roles with buoyant synthesizers and textures that swirl around, all the while grounded by warm mid-tempo beats. The hypnotic interplay works to induce that kind of gentle head bob with half-closed eyes.. and by the time the last track rolls around (which is way too soon) you can just do what I did while writing this, and what I can only assume Kyle did while writing Another Place. Loop it.

Another Place was released November 27, 2021. You can follow Winks on Instragram @thekillerfingers
